At the Woollahra Council meeting on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, a proposal was discussed to replace the cherished passive green space of Lough Playing Fields with two floodlit, fenced off, hard-surfaced bitumen and acrylic multipurpose courts. Here's what this plan potentially entails:

  • Massive Construction: Laying down a vast 1,020 square metre slab of concrete, bitumen, and acrylic, equating to 433 tonnes of hard materials.

  • Intrusive Lighting: Installing four towering floodlights, each 10 meters tall.

  • Sports Infrastructure: Erecting four reversible basketball/netball towers for intensive sports training.

  • These courts will be able to be booked out for commercial purposes by private companies - this is not a small development for local residents.

The financial burden? A staggering at least $750,000 from ratepayers' pockets, according to Council reports.

This development jeopardises a vital passive green space enjoyed by hundreds weekly for picnics, birthdays, sports, fitness, and joyful bubble soccer parties. Lough Playing Fields' beauty lies in its untouched, pristine state post-events.

If this proposal proceeds, we risk losing this serene passive green space to bitumen, acrylic and floodlights, disrupting the community's connection to nature.

Now is the critical moment to act! Together, we must stand to preserve Lough Playing Fields, safeguarding our green spaces for future generations.
